Biography

Julie Wallach is sexual assault survivor, advocate, public speaker, and expressive writing group facilitator. In 1998, Julie was sexually assaulted by a gynecological oncologist at UCLA. She filed a complaint against the doctor, which was ignored and suppressed by the university and California Medical Board. The doctor continued to prey on vulnerable women for decades after Julie’s initial reporting of his predatory actions, until eventually over 200 women spoke out against him and UCLA.

Before this horrific trauma occurred, Julie was repeatedly sexually abused by her father when she was a child and has carried the trauma of this throughout her life. With her history of intense healing and eventual empowerment, Julie is passionate about sharing her story and supporting others as they heal. One way to make this possible is by lifting statutes of limitations nationwide for sexual assault survivors. To further this goal, Julie was invited to speak to the California Senate and Judiciary Committee in favor of a law lifting the statute of limitations for a specific group of sexual assault survivors, which passed unanimously with bipartisan support.

Julie has been interviewed by various media outlets as a survivors’ advocate and speaks publicly about her experience. To extend her gratitude to a powerful organization, Julie volunteers at Planned Parenthood as co-lead of a monthly storytelling training workshop involving reproductive rights.

As a mother of two daughters (15 and 22 years old), Julie is deeply committed to making the world an emotionally safe place for her children. She spends most of her time with her children and loving boyfriend. She is a lifelong athlete with a newly-found passion for road cycling, and climbed Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States in one day (with a broken bone!)—a great feat, but not as monumental as healing from trauma of her own.
