ACTION ALERT! Sign the White House petition to revoke Cosby’s Medal of Freedom – http://wh.gov/i9q8t
PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD!
The presidential medal of freedom is the highest honor award to an American civilian. Bill Cosby’s name does not belong among this distinguished list. Cosby admitted to procuring drugs to have sex with women without their consent. We cannot yet give his accusers their day in court, but we can fight back in the court of public opinion.

Assault Prevention Group Sends Video Appeal to Obama As Cosby Petition Gains Momentum
Two U.S. Senators, Victims Rights’ Advocates Join Thousands in Calling For Return of Cosby’s Medal of Freedom
Angela Rose, the executive director of the national nonprofit organization PAVE: Promoting Awareness | Victim Empowerment, today released a personal plea to President Obama to support efforts to rescind the Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest honor, from comedian Bill Cosby. The video was sent today to White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest.
PAVE’s effort gained high-powered momentum over the weekend as U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand became the second U.S. Senator to call for the medal to be revoked. Others expressing support include: U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill, prominent victims rights supporter Marc Klaas, Cosby accuser Barbara Bowman, and more than 8,000 petitioners to the White House (and counting!). CLICK HERE for petition.
In her video appeal to the President — Ms. Rose – who today commemorates the 19th anniversary of her own abduction and assault – said the following:
“I have dedicated my entire adult life to preventing sexual violence and empowering survivors. I applaud Senator Gillibrand and Senator McCaskill for their brave leadership in working to prevent sexual assault and promote consent in the military and on college campuses.
“This is a catalyst moment in our nation’s history to send a strong message to the youth of America that consent requires a verbal, enthusiastic, freely given and sober “yes”, not the absence of a “no.”
PAVE is also calling on other national groups to join the movement. Said Rose: “Promoting our White House petition promotes the notion of consent and healthy communication in interpersonal relationships. We also need to cultivate communities of support for survivors, because sadly all too often abused women and men are met with blame, shame and additional traumatization when they speak out. And this needs to change.”
Rose applauded President Obama’s leadership and remains optimistic. ”President Obama and his administration have made great strides in the issue of sexual assault – and I am optimistic he will join our national consent movement by revoking Cosby’s Medal of Freedom.”
This week, PAVE will be releasing a free, downloadable guide to talk to your children about sexual assault available at ShatteringTheSilence.org.”

PAVE outlined three options for President Obama to examine in regard to the medal:
- Executive Order – The President could issue an order that the 2002 Medal of Freedom bestowed on Bill Cosby is hereby rescinded.
- Personal Statement – The President could express his opinion that the award should be rescinded.
- Request to Cosby – The President could ask Mr. Cosby to return the medal.
Bowman also urged former President George W. Bush, who bestowed the award on the comedian in 2002, to make a statement of support for Cosby’s victims as well.

Promoting Awareness, Victim Empowerment (PAVE) is a multi-chapter national 501c3 nonprofit organization that uses education and action to shatter the silence of sexual violence through targeted social, educational and legislative tactics.
“The presidential medal of freedom is the highest honor award to an American civilian,” said Rose. “The list of those receiving this honor include Mother Teresa, Eunice Kennedy Shriver and Meryl Streep. Bill Cosby’s name does not belong among this distinguished list.
“Cosby admitted to procuring drugs to have sex with women without their consent. He has been accused of serial rape by dozens of others. We cannot yet give his accusers their day in court, but we can fight back in the court of public opinion.
“This award was given to Mr. Cosby under false pretenses. The White House was clearly not aware that Cosby would be accused of multiple counts of sexual violence.
“As such, we urge President Obama to take the unprecedented action of revoking this award and that Bill Cosby’s name be expunged from any official lists of recipients.”
The award was conferred on the comedian in 2002 by Mr. Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush. Just this week, Disney announced its removal of a Bill Cosby statue from Walt Disney World. In December, the U.S. Navy stripped Cosby of his honorary title of Chief Petty Officer.
